Ghana in Early Talks With Amazon's Leo Satellite Internet Service
Ghana is in early talks with Amazon about its Leo satellite internet service, a development that could expand connectivity and AI infrastructure in the country. The discussions extend previously reported contact between Amazon and President Mahama about broadband expansion, now with Leo's satellite infrastructure specifically identified as the focus.
Amazon Leo: now we have a technology on the table
Two days ago this was a vague New York conversation. Today there's an actual service named: Amazon Leo, the low-Earth-orbit satellite network that's already signed its first African deal with South Africa's Herotel.
That specificity matters. Leo targets exactly the places fibre can't reach commercially — the rural communities where Ghana's six northern regions lost signal entirely last week because three cable cuts hit at once.
Satellite doesn't fix cut cables, but it doesn't run on them either. If Leo reaches Ghana, it's a genuinely different kind of redundancy — not more fibre on the same fragile routes, but a second layer that survives them failing.
Still early talks. But the jump from 'broadband chat' to 'specific technology, specific communities' is the gap between a photo opportunity and a real negotiation.
