Sam George Outlines $270M Ghana AI Investment Plan
Communications Minister Sam George has outlined a $270 million national AI investment plan comprising $250 million for infrastructure and $20 million for a seed fund. George also warned against feeding government data into foreign AI models and urged Africa to develop homegrown digital technologies, framing sovereign technology development as a policy priority.
Ghana AI Fund: $250m for servers, $20m for the people who build on them
The split inside Sam George's $270 million plan is the real story.
$250 million goes to infrastructure. $20 million — one thirteenth of that — goes to a seed fund for the startups and founders who would actually use it.
Ghana already has a 10-year National AI Strategy and the ambition is clearly real. But Hubtel recently doubled salaries and still couldn't fill 30 machine-learning roles locally. If the bottleneck is people, not servers, this allocation has it backwards.
