IMF Advises BoG and SEC to Collaborate Closely on Crypto Risk Oversight
The IMF has directly advised the Bank of Ghana and the Securities and Exchange Commission to collaborate more closely in aligning their cryptocurrency risk assessments. The guidance represents a concrete regulatory signal for Ghana's digital asset space, extending the IMF's earlier finding that Ghana's crypto guidelines fall short of comprehensive oversight.
Ghana Crypto: two regulators, one rulebook gap
The IMF's warning isn't really about collaboration — it's about a $21 billion market where the Bank of Ghana and the Securities and Exchange Commission are each watching a different half of the same risk.
Right now, a crypto business that touches both payment and securities functions can be supervised by both bodies under different reporting templates, with different data standards and potentially different enforcement thresholds. That gap is an invitation: operate in the space between the two regimes and neither catches you cleanly.
The IMF is pointing at the eM-Tech real-time reporting system the BoG already runs — and suggesting the SEC plug into it rather than build a parallel one. That's a concrete fix, not just a coordination platitude. Whether both regulators move on it before December's framework goes live is the real question.
