Stanbic Pilots Cedi-Based Payments for Chinese Imports Under BoG Governor Announcement
The Bank of Ghana Governor has announced that Ghanaian importers can now pay for Chinese goods in cedis through a Stanbic Bank pilot arrangement, a development that directly reduces foreign exchange pressure on import transactions.
Cedi-Yuan Pilot: Ghanaian importers just lost one middleman — the dollar
The quiet detail in Stanbic's pilot is the mechanism: it runs on China's own cross-border payment network, CIPS, so a cedi deposit in Accra converts and settles in yuan in Beijing without ever touching the US dollar.
For a Ghanaian importer buying machinery or textiles from China, that's one fewer currency conversion — and one fewer point where a sliding cedi bites twice.
Whether it's actually cheaper depends on Stanbic's own rates and fees, which the BoG hasn't published. But if GCB follows with its own version, that competition is where the real savings would emerge.
