Bank of Ghana to Issue Crypto Licensing Guidelines, Opening Virtual Asset Sector
Bank of Ghana Governor Asiama has signalled that crypto licensing guidelines will be rolled out soon, a move that would formally open Ghana's virtual asset sector to regulated businesses. The announcement represents a concrete regulatory milestone for digital asset operators and fintech firms tracking Ghana's crypto policy framework.
Ghana Crypto: pretending it doesn't exist never worked anyway
Governor Asiama's framing is the most honest thing a central banker has said about crypto in this region: Ghana tried ignoring it, and people kept using it.
So the Bank of Ghana is doing the harder thing — building a proper licensing framework under the Virtual Assets Service Providers Act, backed by a cross-agency committee that includes the Securities and Exchange Commission.
The real question now is whether the licence conditions, when they arrive, are ones local operators can actually meet — or whether 'regulated' quietly becomes a barrier that only well-capitalised foreign players clear.
