MTN confirms Africa-wide 3G shutdown timeline, signalling major infrastructure transition
MTN has confirmed the timeline for shutting down 3G networks across Africa, with Nigeria marking the end of a two-decade era of 3G connectivity. The shutdown frees up spectrum and capex for 4G and 5G densification but creates near-term coverage risk for users and businesses in areas not yet upgraded. For investors, the transition accelerates the infrastructure upgrade cycle and amplifies demand for affordable 4G devices and data services across MTN's footprint.
MTN's 3G Exit: the upgrade is real, but the gap in between is the risk
MTN shutting down 3G to free up spectrum for 4G and 5G is the right direction. Faster, denser networks are what Ghanaian businesses actually need.
But there's a window between when 3G goes dark and when 4G reaches every corner — and in that window, anyone still on a basic 3G handset loses connectivity entirely. In Ghana, that's not a niche user. Affordable 4G devices are still out of reach for a meaningful slice of the market.
The transition is the gain. Who gets left behind during it is the real question to watch.
