Ghana's Total Payment Transactions Hit GH¢9.45 Trillion in 2025 as Cheque Use Declines
Ghana's total payment transaction value reached GH¢9.45 trillion in 2025, according to Bank of Ghana data, with cheque transactions recording a decline over the same period. Separately, internet banking transactions reached GH¢383.82 billion in 2025, per the same BoG report. The two figures together provide hard ecosystem data confirming the ongoing shift toward digital payment channels in Ghana.
Digital payments: the volume tells one story, the value tells another
Mobile banking transaction values grew 130.5% last year, according to Bank of Ghana data. That's the number everyone will share.
But sit with the cheque figures for a moment. Fewer cheques are being written — volumes fell 4.8% — yet the total value of cheques cleared still rose to GH¢415 billion. The big-ticket transactions, the ones that move serious money between institutions, haven't abandoned the old rails yet.
Digital is winning the frequency war. It hasn't won the trust war for large transfers. That gap is exactly where Ghana's next generation of payment builders has room to work.
