Bank of Ghana Blacklists 20 Unlicensed Mobile Loan Apps
The Bank of Ghana has publicly cautioned consumers against 20 named mobile loan applications operating without the required licences. The regulatory action represents a direct enforcement signal for Ghana's digital lending sector, requiring fintech operators to verify their compliance standing.
Loan Apps: a blacklist names names — now comes the harder part
Twenty unlicensed lending apps, named publicly by the Bank of Ghana, is a sharper move than most regulators make. Naming them matters: it gives ordinary borrowers something concrete to check.
But the BoG's notice stops at the list. The apps are still running. The enforcement — investigating, prosecuting, actually switching them off — is described as ongoing work with unnamed agencies.
For legitimate digital lenders trying to build here, that gap is the real question. A blacklist that lingers without follow-through doesn't clean up the market; it just documents the problem.
